I alone remain, and will tell the tale, the sole surviving witness…

While at EWTN, one was privileged to meet and speak with many, many saintly laborers in the Vineyard of The Lord. Some of these meetings were private, “among friends,” as it were, and sometimes things were shared that would never reach a publicist’s ears. This was “one of those” meetings.

While visiting one evening with Deacon Bill Steltemeier, President of EWTN, at his “home away from home” while he was in town at EWTN (he and his wife, Ramona, lived in Nashville- he would come to Birmingham for 3-4 days during the week), I was pleasantly surprised that we would be joined by two “frequent faces” at EWTN, Msgr. Eugene Clark of the Archdiocese of New York, and Fr. Regis Scanlon, OFM Cap, both of whom were recording new teaching programs at EWTN, which they did quite regularly at that time.

On this night, Fr. Scanlon shared an (almost certainly) unheard before and virtually unknown experience of his, in his role as Spiritual Director for the Sisters of Charity (Saint Mother Teres’s sisters) in the Catholic Wasteland of Canada.

The bishops of Canada were “leading” their flock to further minimize and “de-Eucharisticize” His Church (to borrow a phrase from Saint Archbishop Fulton Sheen). Specifically, at this time, kneeling would not longer be permitted by them during The Consecration Itself, nor during the Eucharistic Prayer.

The Sisters, however, following their authentic Catholic spirit and that of their saintly mother/Foundress, did not accede to this… “decision” by the bishops of Canada…very much to the consternation of said bishops in Canada.

Ultimately, a conference call had to be made between the CCB representative (i do not recall the bishop’s name, nor his position), Mother Teresa herself, and Fr Scanlon. Sr Nirmala may also have been on the call, but again I cannot be certain due to the passage of the years…

In his relation of the event, Fr Scanlon imitated the bishop of God’s Church as speaking in a puffed up, grandiose, and authoritative manner, saying, “Yes, Mother, the bishops have decided that we will stand for the Eucharistic Prayer…”.

I apologize here, but I do not recall Mother Teresa’s exact words after this opening statement. They were, however, as any Catholic would know and expect, responded to negatively by her.
So, the bishop responded authoritatively once again, saying, in effect, that “This is What We Have Decided, and So This Is The Way It’s Going To Be.”

…

To this, God’s saint responded, “Very well, I will tell the Holy Father that we will be closing all of the houses in Canada, and -“…

Fr Scanlon shared that “You could hear the bishop jumping through his phone, yelling ‘THEY CAN KNEEL!!!’ “, to which, of course, all of us present had a long, satisfied, ridiculing-the-sadly-ridiculous laugh.

Every once in a while, in this crazy, upside-down world, God does grant an obvious victory to His saints…

Any serious observer must note two major truths in the above sad story.

First, in addition to the “spirit of Judas” which possesses both the bishop above and the entire CanadianConference of “Bishops”: Judas refused to believe in The Eucharist, as St John describes at the end of Chapter 6 of his Gospel, and he links this disbelief to his betrayal of Our Lord. We know that Judas stayed in the Church, without Faith in Our Lord, without Faith in The Eucharist, without understanding, without caring…becoming a thief, and the Betrayer. Thus he made himself into one who refused to enter through The Gate, but who wanted to enter by any other way, becoming, as Our Lord said in John 10, the thief, who enters only to steal, to kill and to destroy. Judas was a thief, as we know. He killed by refusing to bring neither himself nor others to Jesus, to The Mass. He thus worked at destroying what Jesus was working to build.
Sadly, this is what most non-credible western and westernized bishops do today, what they are today.

Sound “too harsh” to your ears? Listen, then, to the words of totally credible, modern day saints: Cardinal Sarah, a great student of Cardinal Ratzinger and his teachings and thought, relates that (Saint) Pope Benedict XVI spoke of bishops today as acting as “practical atheists”(!!). Bishops today, many if not most, are “practical atheists”! Supposed-to-be defenders-of and Teachers-of The One True Faith do not possess It!!

Just like Judas.

Do what they say. But, do not do what they do… Do not believe what they teach, what they believe. Believe His holy saints.

Second, is The Response of said saints, in this case, Mother Teresa. As a great priest once said during his homily given in a televised Mass at EWTN, “When bishops act like nuns, nuns have to act like bishops.” Mother Teresa here responds in this way, defending Our Lord, defending her Sisters, defending His Church from error, from 1) error in practice and thus 2) error in meaning and in Truth.
We live in days of error, days of evil. The Light still shines in the darkness, but, it takes true men and fathers to credibly speak it in Spirit and Truth, with no admixture of the errors of the spirit of the world.

Be a saint.

In the words of Cardinal Sarah, “God or Nothing.”

In The Mass, we are given Infinity Himself and Eternity Himself. In the anointed words of The Angelic Doctor… “Even though He be Omnipotent, He could give [us…YOU] no more!”

Sound “too harsh” to your ears?
