A Brief Story About an Average Bishop

The following is a brief story told to us from the lips of Mother Angelica herself, shortly after her return from visiting Pope John Paul II, keeping him updated on her work and progress in spreading the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

I believe she said that it was on the return leg from this trip, that she was to speak somewhere in England to a group of Catholics. At that time, Cardinal Basil Hume was Archbishop of Westminster, metropolitan of England and Wales.

Cardinal Hume was not, apparently, a fan of Mother Angelica. He let it be known before her visit that he was not planning to attend her talk.

However, one way or another, perhaps at the behest of his own Guardian Angel, he did actually attend Mother’s talk.

And, he must have been struck to the depths of his soul, for, as she told us, he approached her after the talk, and said to her directly, “Mother, please pray for me, that I save my soul.”

Would that our worldly, western and westernized bishops, so ignorant and non-credible, would open their hearts, minds and souls to the Holy Spirit, and close them once and for all to their “good old boy” network, being collegial amongst themselves and against the laity, against Our Lord.

Most of them today (in the west, at least) are not credible.

As Our Lord said, “Do what they say, but not what they do,” (Mt 23:3). They put themselves and the world first, and do not fulfill their first responsibilities to Our Lord and His Church. They are not credible. Seek first His Kingdom, and follow the example and teachings of saintly men of God as we have seen with our own eyes, such as John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
